    • The aim of the research was to determine and analyze the pattern of maxillofacial (MF) injury associated with head injury at a neurosurgical center (NIMHANS, Bangalore). Methodology: This is a descriptive analytical study of trauma patients at NIMHANS Bangalore in which the medical records of 250 patients who were referred for MF injury may or may not be associated with head and neurological injury were analyzed during a period of 6 month. Results: Road Traffic Accidents (RTA) were the most common cause and contributed to 77% of the injuries. A total of 229 males were affected in comparison to only 21 females. 85 patients (34%) were under the influence of alcohol. About 44.8% of the patients had MF injury. Midfacial injuries accounted for 73.2% of the total fractures. The soft tissue lacerations were distributed predominantly over middle and upper third of the face. Preponderance of patients had mild head injury and was handled conservatively in the present group. Operative instructions for maxillo-facial fractures were displaced facial bone fractures or pan facial trauma. Conclusion: Adult males were the typical frequent victims in MF trauma, and RTA were responsible for the majority of cranio- MF trauma. Most of the referred trauma patients sustained mild head injuries and were managed conservatively.

    • The aim of the study was to evaluate the esthetic preferences of lay persons and orthodontists about lip position in Indian Maratha males and females. Materials and Methods: The profile images of Indian Maratha males and females (Class I skeletal and dental) were digitally adjusted to the mean values found in Indian Maratha population. The lip profile was adjusted such that the upper lip (UL) and lower lips (LL) lie at a mean distance from Rickett’s E-line. These images were used as baseline images, and the UL and LLs were altered such that they lay 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mm in front of or behind the E-line. The images were viewed and ranked by 10 orthodontists and lay persons each. Once the ratings were obtained, they were analyzed using ANOVA, followed by SPSS 16. Conclusion: The study found that both laypersons and orthodontists prefer a more retrusive profile in Indian Maratha males compared with females and were more likely to rate a protrusive profile as unacceptable with regard to lip position.

    • Acne vulgaris is the most common skin disease of the youth especially in puberty age. One of the most common complications of acne is scarring. It has been found to have a significant impact on their psychological well-being and has been associated with depression and suicide ideation. Acne causes emotional upset and impact to the patient by disfiguring face and scarring skin. Multiple surgical treatments are available for acne scars, which include dermabrasion, microdermabrasion (MDA), laser treatments, and dermal fillers. Aims: The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of MDA in facial acne scars in terms of results and patient satisfaction. Materials and Methods: A total number of 50 patients with acne scars, who visited the hospital outdoor patient department, were included in this study. All patients were treated with MDA for 10 sittings, 2 weeks apart. Analysis: Patients were evaluated and analyzed after 10 sittings or before (if the complete response occurred before 10 sittings), both objectively and subjectively (in term of patient satisfaction). Result and Conclusion: Of a total of 50 patients, 25 patients (50%) had moderate scarring and of these 21 (84%) showed good response, 3 (12%) showed fair response and 1 (4%) showed excellent response.

Lower incisor dentoalveolar compensation and symphysis dimensions in class II and class III patients 10.5958/2394-4196.2014.00005.3 Category - Original Article

    • The aim was to study and compare lower incisor dentoalveolar compensation and mandibular symphysis morphology of patients with Class II and Class III malocclusion. Materials and Methods: Lower incisor inclination (incisor mandibular plane angle [IMPA]), as well as buccal (LA) and lingual (LP) cortex depth, and mandibular symphysis height (LH) were measured in 60 lateral cephalometric X-rays of adult patients without prior orthodontic treatment. The subjects were divided into three groups based on antero-posterior skeletal malocclusions - Class I (control group), Class II and Class III groups. Results: IMPA and symphysis dimensions showed significant differences between the sagittal malocclusion groups. In Class III subjects, the lower incisor apex was closer to the buccal cortex, therefore, value of LA was decreased and LH was increased. In Class II subjects, the lower incisor apex was near to the lingual cortex, there value of LP was reduced and LH increased. Conclusion: Narrow alveolus was observed in Class II and III subjects compared to the Class I subjects. Natural compensation elongates the symphysis and influences the lower incisor position. Thus limiting the pre-surgical decompensation and increasing the risk of damage to periodontal tissues.

    • The buccal archwire used in the pre-adjusted edgewise appliances technique is anchored to the brackets by means of ligatures made of soft stainless steel wire of about 0.010 inch diameter. These ligatures are seated under the flanges of the brackets. Various methods have been advocated seating and tying the ligatures. The performed ligatures used in this method differ from those conventionally used in that they can easily and quickly be formed on a jig constructed from available orthodontic material.

    • Cryptorchidism (translated hidden testis) is the most common genital abnormality of childhood, refers to the incomplete descent of the testicle into dependent scrotum. The undescended testicles (UT) can be located anywhere along the path of regular descent between the kidney and just outside of scrotal inlet. It is also known as UT because the majority of testicles that do not migrate completely into the scrotum by birth can be palpable in different areas like in the inguinal region. It affects approximately 30% of baby boys born prematurely and about 4% born at term. As a baby boy grows inside mother’s womb, his testicles are typically formed inside his abdomen and move down (descend) into the scrotum shortly before birth. However in some cases, that move or descent does not occur, and the baby is born with a condition known as UT (or cryptorchidism). Almost 1 in every 100 male children born will have an empty scrotum. It may be on one side or both sides of the scrotum.

    • When nutrients are isolated from whole foods, they do not always act the same. Several nutrients found in fruit and vegetables show an inverse association with oral cancer. Nutrition has enhanced more bring into focus on the levels of biochemical sequences through which ingredients are digested, and other living organic structure are converted from one form to another via metabolism and metabolic pathways. Nutrition also centers on in what way diseases, conditions, and dilemmas can be averted or diminished with a healthy diet. Cancer is preceded by pre-cancerous lesions. Numerous investigations have attempted to determine whether consuming particular food increases or decreases a person’s chance of acquiring cancer. Sadly, various thoughts have conflicted issues, so it is troublesome to understand what impact foods or dietary supplements have on cancer risk. In summation, nutrition includes recognizing how particular disorders,conditions or dilemmas may be generated by dietary factors, such as inadequate food (malnutrition), food allergies, metabolic diseases, etc
